Legacy of History: 37 Spital Square
This zigzag booklet was created during my first year as part of an early exploration into 37 Spital Square. The brief asked us to focus on one aspect connected to the site, whether drawn from the building itself, its history, or the wider context of Spitalfields, and to express that through a handmade or digital artefact. With little experience in digital tools at the time, I chose to work by hand, an approach that taught me the value of material intuition and narrative layering.
I was drawn to the brickwork of the Georgian townhouse, its ubiquity, its tactility, and its quiet endurance through history. Researching its composition revealed glimmers of glass within, and that microscopic discovery became the thread linking brick to glass, the foundation of my later design intervention.
Making this booklet by hand gave the research a physical soul. Each page became a small act of translation, turning observation into touch, and material study into story.
